INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Organisers of an Internet-based project which aims to fight AIDS, hope to receive assistance from around 100,000 home computers.

The FightAIDSatHome said it intends to tap into the unused power of business and individual computers, when they would otherwise be unused, to assist with the project. The aim is to research and identify drugs used in the fight against the HIV virus and the US-based Scripps Research Institute which is behind the project hopes to develop new chemical strategies for the treatment of patients.

The computers of project participants would request data from a central server, process the information and return the results. According to Scripps, the project will enable it to access a significant source of computer processing power, allowing problems to be dealt with more quickly by researchers.

The project follows the World Community grid initiative, funded by computer company IBM, which also uses a network of computers for its work.
